Carrot – Tendersweet

Selected in Germany, the heritage cultivar Tendersweet produces a long, very sweet, cylindrical carrot of 20 to 25 cm. It is perfect for growing in the garden as long as the soil is deep, loose and remains moist and does not form a crust during germination.

Growing tips

Conditions of germination:

depth of sowing: 5 mm

optimal temperatures of germination: 18 to 29 ºC

time for germination: 7 to 21 days

When to sow:

direct seeding when the soil can be worked in the spring or after the last frost in your area when the soil temperature remains above 7.5ºC

successive sowing every 3 weeks until August for a continuous harvest

Sowing technique: in line

Draw a line in the ground (in a pot or in the ground), then sow the seeds in it

Distance in the garden:

between seeds: 1 cm

between plants: 5 to 8 cm

between rows: 20 to 30 cm

Height of the plants: 25 cm

Soil: cool, well drained, deep and sandy

Water: regular watering

Exposure: full sun

Days to harvest: 70 to 75 days for a mature carrot, but they can be eaten younger, as soon as they are formed.

Specificities:

thin out (remove) the young plants when they are 2 cm long in order to give enough space to the remaining roots (allow for an average spacing of 4, 6 or 8 cm between plants, depending on the variety); the removed seedlings can be eaten

after the thinning (the fact of removing the plants too close together), bring back the soil around the base to avoid that the collar turns green but also as a preventive measure against the carrot fly which lays its eggs nearby
